Collaborative work with Charlie Betts

Photographing our paintings framed by Waverley Abbey Ruins. Brought the work to life. Thinking about fragility, deconstruction/construction, monumental/un-monumental, scenery/backdrop and surface. Planning our show at Harts Lane Gallery, New Cross, for October.

Monument

Creating a sense of attraction and repulsion, my work addresses consumer desires and presents the reality behind the seductive facade. Portraying subject matter of ruin, garbage and the mundane, I use drawing, painting and collage to break the utopian desire of consumerism.
'Monument' is a new drawing using HB pencil. The time and detail put into the work is reminiscent of the labour put into making the products we buy, which ironically now reside as one-use disposable ruins in the plastic rubbish sacks within the drawing. The work presents the un-monumental as something huge and monumental - a ruin with a sense of beauty but ultimately referencing the environmental impact of the hyper-consumer condition of the developed world.
