Last week I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the scientists from UNAM university working so hard to help the preservation of Xochimilco, and the Axolotls who are endemic to this fresh water lake ecosystem.
Carlos works daily with the Chinamperos (farmers of Xochimilco), to help create refuges of clean water. These refuges become havens for insects, small fishes and axolotls.
It was such a joy to be shown the Chinampas, first hand but such an inspiring and passionate group of scientists. We collected water and lettuce samples for testing back in the lab. We also saw the destructive side of disrespectful tourism, football pitches and trash pollution.
I learnt so much from these amazing people, and I can't wait to share more about the project's development. Thank you to Creature Conserve who are sponsoring this conservation inspired art project.
